Why I Hate the word "Diet"

"Your eating a salad? You must be on a diet" "Your so skinny, why are you dieting?"

These are just a few things I've had personally said to me, but I've heard them in a lot of other places as well. The reason why this bugs me so much, is because I am in fact not on a diet. I choose to eat healthy. I would rather indulge in fruits and salads, then eat a piece of cake but that's just me. People often confuse healthy eating habits and dieting. Well I'm here to set the record straight. There are a few major differences between dieting and healthy eating :

1) Diets are used to restrict your eating and lose large amounts of weight. The goal of a diet is to reduce your daily intake and avoid all high sugar, empty calorie foods. This works great for some people, but for others, they go back to the same eating habits after they've lost the weight. They gain back the weight they lost and there forced to diet once again.

Healthy eating teaches you to eat more well-balanced and wholesome foods. That with some exercise will help you not only lose wait but live an all around healthier lifestyle. This gives you the knowledge and experience to continue on the right path and not gain back the weight you worked so hard to lose.

2) Dieting drains your energy. Since your reducing your food intake your body won't have as much energy. You will often find yourself tired and in some cases people can get anxious or even depressed well on a diet.

Healthy eating gives your body the nutrients it needs to have energy. You won't find yourself dragging your feet half way through the day.

3) Dieting also limits your choices. Your often given strict guidelines to follow of what you can and can't eat. So not only do you have to eat less but now there are only certain things you can eat as well.

Healthy eating gives you a wide range of options and allows you to have freedom in choosing what you want to eat. Also having a well balanced diet allows for a little bit of indulgence sometimes.

Now don't get me wrong these are just a few differences and by no means am I pushing you to choose healthy eating over dieting. I just want people to understand the difference between the 2. So hopefully next time I get a salad in a restaurant I won't hear "Wow she must be dieting", instead I'll hear "That girl eats really healthy".
